6 Ways to Create Good Tooth Brushing Habits that Actually Work with Children

After several months of struggling to get my children to brush their teeth consistently, I decided to look up some possible solutions online prior to throwing in the towel.

The following are six techniques that I have discovered that actually helped build consistent teeth brushing habits with my children. Of course I must state a disclaimer that in addition to brushing their teeth in the comfort your abode, visiting a pediatric dentist is highly recommended by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.

It takes time teach a child to brush their teeth thoroughly and consistently. At first, depending on the child it may be tricky but with time my children became accustomed to the daily practice.

The following tips are effective since they worked for my children. Follow them to the latter to achieve better and positive results.

Introduce teeth brushing early

It is prudent to start this crucial activity as early as possible. Typically, the best time to do this is when they are still young without any teeth at all.

I was surprised to learn that even gums required cleaning germs and food particles at an early age to minimize the likelihood of bacteria developing in their mouths.

The way I was taught was to use a soft textured damp close so as not to scratch or be too abrasive on their gums.

You can easily do this using a damp cloth. For this reason, they will get used to the fact that cleaning their teeth is part of the routine. If you wait until they are older, it will be troublesome teaching them the essence of oral hygiene. In fact, the odds that their teeth will be in bad condition are high.

Choose the perfect toothbrush

Children love appealing and attractive products. To get them to brush teeth, buy a colorful toothbrush. For the boys, it can have graphics like those of Batman. Trust me they will look forward to brushing their teeth on a daily basis. As for the girls, get them a toothbrush that has a doll’s picture on it. They will love the idea of holding the brush and admiring it. The bristles should be super soft to ensure comfort while brushing. Since they have delicate gums, it’s good to take care of them. Remember to buy a new toothbrush after three months elapse. This way, if they had any infection it won’t recur.

Use fluoride toothpaste meant for children

Fluoride toothpaste has a rather pleasant taste in the mouth. Additionally, you should buy those that suit children. Don’t use an adult’s toothpaste because they are bitter. Toothpaste made for children is sweet and flavorsome. It can have mint, candy or fruit flavors. Hence, your child will love the smell as well as the taste. For children below 3 years, a small toothpaste amount works best. Those who are between 3 to 6 years can use toothpaste that equals a pea size.

Make it a routine

It’s no secret that children need some training to learn and maintain the practice. Habits that are repeated get stuck on a child’s life. On that account, brushing teeth is not exceptional and should be a routine. You can hack this by helping them out in the morning, lunch and after dinner. When the activity is well organized, kids will know the right time to brush teeth. For instance, make it custom for them to brush their teeth before they go and play their fun games. You need to supervise them so that they can brush ideally as you taught them; it will yield great results.
